The potato harvesting unit has a certain safe gradient value when working on sloping fields, generally around 8°. If it is greater than this value, the center of gravity of the potato harvesting unit will shift sideways, which will affect the harvest quality and easily cause the unit to roll over.

Potholes in the ground will cause the potato harvester to dig at an unstable depth. When encountering potholes on the ground, the excavation depth increases, the tractor load increases, and the separation of potato soil is not clear, and the potato harvesting unit is prone to squatting. When the ground is raised, the digging depth is reduced, the potato breakage rate is increased, and the potato net yield is reduced.

The mechanized harvesting of potatoes requires digging up and separating potato tubers from the soil, which has a basic requirement on the soil moisture content of the arable land where the potatoes are harvested. The same soil has different mechanical properties due to different moisture content. When the water content is low, the soil is hard and the potato harvesting resistance is large; when the water content reaches the lower plastic limit, the soil is soft and the harvesting resistance is small, which is the suitable harvesting state of the soil. When the water increases and reaches the adhesion limit, the adhesion force occurs, and the soil adheres to the working parts and walking devices of the potato harvester, increasing the harvesting resistance, and the potato soil is not separated cleanly, or even cannot be harvested.

Soil presents three different physical states, solid, plastic, and flowing, depending on its water content. In the solid state, the soil does not stick to each other and does not adhere to the working parts of the potato harvester. However, clay-heavy soils with less than 10% moisture are highly cohesive and can form hard clods. In the plastic state, the soil can be deformed by its own weight, and the performance of the soil being screened out is improved, but at this time, the potato harvesting unit cannot harvest normally in the field. Therefore, the potato harvester harvests in potato fields with low humidity and better management, the soil is looser, the digging resistance is small, and the soil is easily sifted off.

7. soil free of debris

The essence of potato mechanized harvesting operation is to filter the ploughing layer where the potato grows. In the whole process, the excavation shovel is in the state of deep cutting and moving the soil; the separation mechanisms such as rotary screen and swing screen are in the state of filtering and conveying at a certain speed and amplitude, so as to achieve the laying and collection of potato tubers. Therefore, it is required that there should be no stones, iron wires, iron nails, mulch, braids and other hard or soft fibers in the soil, so as not to damage the digging shovel, jam the rotating screen, block the separation mechanism, and affect the quality of mechanized potato harvesting.
